Chairman's Message

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and community of graduate and undergraduate students, I welcome you to the website of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland. Our programs and venue in the Nation's Capital provide outstanding opportunities for intellectual and professional development. What you will discover as you read through this website should provide you with an introduction to the excitement of our curricula, facilities, faculty, and research programs. We are constantly striving to improve our educational and research programs and remain at the forefront of research and education in many areas of civil and environmental engineering.

Over the past ten years, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has grown dramatically; attracted outstanding faculty, research staff, and students; and radically expanded its programs and sponsored research support. Our curriculum focuses on analysis and creative thinking and our educational programs are aligned with the needs of the industry in the 21st century. Our curriculum also strikes a balance between fundamental science, engineering science and design and further integrates the use of information technology. Our graduate and research programs are flourishing.

As you browse through the pages of this website, you will learn about our most recent accomplishments. Our graduate programs in transportation, engineering project management, environmental and water resources and infrastructure engineering have expanded significantly in the past three years and, in particular, our transportation and project management programs are among the best in the nation. At the same time, the department's values of close, community interaction among faculty, staff, and students has been enriched.

Our goal is to continue to work on the cutting-edge of civil and environmental research and education in the nation, and to make the most of the opportunities presented by our close affiliation with state of Maryland and federal activities and missions. We have a vibrant and exciting environment for research and education and we are committed to enriching our community by recruiting outstanding new members of faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students.
