CEE Senior Students:
The CEE Department strongly urges you to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE or EIT) examination in your final undergraduate semester. Passing this exam is the first official step to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer. Many employers consider this as a very positive element of a resume when deciding whom to hire. Also, the sooner you pass the FE exam, the sooner you can take the PE exam to become a licensed Professional Engineer. Analyses have shown that students who take the FE exam as an undergraduate are more likely to pass than those who wait to take the exam after they graduate. Much of the exam is based on course material from the freshman-to-junior years, so the longer that you wait, the more you potentially will forget.

The exam is given nationally twice per year: mid-April and late October. However, the registration deadline is 60 days before the exam date, that is, mid-February and late August.

The Department urges you to look at the registration form and register for the exam well before the deadline. Information to take the exam in Maryland is available at: www.dllr.state.md.us/license/prof_eng/petakeexam.htm

The registration form to take the exam in Maryland is available at: www.dllr.state.md.us/forms/engineerF1.doc

The application requires that an Official Transcript be sent to the licensing board. Also, if you have not graduated, a letter of “anticipated graduation” need to be requested to FE/Graduation Letter Request. This letter needs to be generated from the Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support office. Please allow sufficient time for the letter to be prepared.

Loads of information about the FE exam is found at the webpage of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying: www.ncees.org/exams/fundamentals/

Questions about Professional Engineering licensure, the licensure process, and the FE exam can be directed to Dr. Allen Davis, 301-405-1958.
